A bicycle helmet that does not fit properly is almost worse than no
helmet at all, because it can give a dangerous sense of protection
against head injury, where there may be no protection at all. Watch this
video from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)
for simple instructions on how to properly fit a bicycle helmet.
Simple Steps to Fitting a Bicycle Helmet
Transcript: How to Fit a
Bicycle Helmet
If you will be buying new helmets be sure from the
label that they are CPSC certified. If you are using an older helmet,
make sure it is SNELL or ANSI approved. There are even some
dual-certified helmets that can be used for bicycling and skate
boarding.
Whether there is a bicycle helmet law in your area or not, it's a smart
idea for everyone to wear a helmet. Adults can set a good example for
the kids.
Step 1: Sizing
Once you have measured your head and chosen a helmet, adjust the sizing
pads or the fitting ring for a comfortable fit without any rocking from
side to side.
Step 2: Position
The helmet should sit level on your head and low on the forehead - no
more than one or two finger-widths above the eyebrow.
Step 3: Buckle
Adjust the lengths of the straps so the buckle is centered under the
chin.
Step 4: Side Straps
Adjust the slider on both straps to form a "V" shape under and slightly
in front of the ears. Lock the slider if possible.
Step 5: Chin Straps
Buckle the chin strap and tighten it until snug. No more than one or two
fingers should fit under the strap.
At this point, double-check to make sure that the helmet is secure and
doesn't rock back and forth. If a big yawn doesn't pull down on your
head, refer back to step 5 and tighten the chin strap. And if you just
can't get the helmet to fit, try another one.
Remember, a helmet can only protect your head if you wear it each time
you ride. If you outgrow your helmet, or if you are in a crash, replace
it immediately or you won't be protected.
With your new helmet properly fitted you can ride with confidence that
you are getting the best protection possible.
